THE PAST
âNO, ANDREWâ JESSICA WIPED her eyes and nose with the back of her arm, unable to stop the tears. âPlease, tell me youâre lying.â
âItâs true.â His voice was all too calm for the seriousness of what heâd just told her.
âA wife?â It couldnât be true. âYouâre married?â How could this be true? Heâd told her so many times that he loved her and only her. Heâd made love to her as if she meant everything to him. How could he do that if he had a wife?
He nodded.
âHow long?â When he didnât immediately reply, Jessicaâs voice grew in pitch. âHow long, Andrew?â
Turning, he walked to the window of the cabin and glanced outside. It was a cold January day, but bright, with a light dusting of snow. âFourteen years.â
âFourteen years?â Her heart plummeted, down to a dark pool of despair she didnât know existed within her. This didnât make sense. âWhat ⦠are you separated?â
âNo.â
âBut youâre having problems.â She was grasping at straws, but sheâd grasp at anything, anything that would help her understand.
He didnât even face her as he shrugged.
âOh, God.â Jessica gripped her stomach, pressing her hand against the life that grew inside. A life she and Andrew had created. Then another horror hit her. âDo you have children? With your wife?â
He did face her then, his handsome face drawn with stress. âYes, I do. I have a daughter. Sheâs twelve.â
âYou son of a bitch!â she cried. She wanted to charge at him, punch him, kick him, choke him with her bare hands, but instead she made tight fists, her nails breaking her skin as they dug into her palms.
âI know, and Iâm sorry,â he said. âI didnât mean for you to find out like this. But things were getting too seriousâ¦â
âGetting?â God, they already had gotten serious. She was in love with him. She was carrying his child.
âWhatever,â he said, then faced the window again. âThe point is, now that you knowââ
âYou face me when you talk to me.â Anger had replaced the initial shock, and Jessicaâs voice was now low and lethal.
He turned. âNow that you know, you understand why you canât have this baby.â
She couldnât stop blinking as she looked at him. Who was this man? Certainly not the one who had lain with her several times, whispered words of undying love to her. He was a stranger.
âOf course, Iâll pay for the abortion.â
âAbortion?â
âYes. You canât have this baby, Jessica. My wifeâ¦â His voice trailed off.
No, this wasnât happening. This couldnât be happening. Maybe something else was going on. How could he tell her he loved her if he was really in love with his wife?
âYou said you love me, Andrew.â
âI donât want this baby.â His voice was firm, leaving no room for doubtâand her heart shattered into a million pieces.
She ran to the bathroom, where she threw up. More evidence of the life growing inside her. Or evidence of the fact that sheâd made the biggest mistake of her life.
Andrew wasnât waiting for her when she emerged from the cabinâs small bathroom.
