THE PAST

“NO, ANDREW” JESSICA WIPED her eyes and nose with the back of her arm, unable to stop the tears. “Please, tell me you’re lying.”

“It’s true.” His voice was all too calm for the seriousness of what he’d just told her.

“A wife?” It couldn’t be true. “You’re married?” How could this be true? He’d told her so many times that he loved her and only her. He’d made love to her as if she meant everything to him. How could he do that if he had a wife?

He nodded.

“How long?” When he didn’t immediately reply, Jessica’s voice grew in pitch. “How long, Andrew?”

Turning, he walked to the window of the cabin and glanced outside. It was a cold January day, but bright, with a light dusting of snow. “Fourteen years.”

“Fourteen years?” Her heart plummeted, down to a dark pool of despair she didn’t know existed within her. This didn’t make sense. “What … are you separated?”

“No.”

“But you’re having problems.” She was grasping at straws, but she’d grasp at anything, anything that would help her understand.

He didn’t even face her as he shrugged.

“Oh, God.” Jessica gripped her stomach, pressing her hand against the life that grew inside. A life she and Andrew had created. Then another horror hit her. “Do you have children? With your wife?”

He did face her then, his handsome face drawn with stress. “Yes, I do. I have a daughter. She’s twelve.”

“You son of a bitch!” she cried. She wanted to charge at him, punch him, kick him, choke him with her bare hands, but instead she made tight fists, her nails breaking her skin as they dug into her palms.

“I know, and I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean for you to find out like this. But things were getting too serious…”

“Getting?” God, they already had gotten serious. She was in love with him. She was carrying his child.

“Whatever,” he said, then faced the window again. “The point is, now that you know—”

“You face me when you talk to me.” Anger had replaced the initial shock, and Jessica’s voice was now low and lethal.

He turned. “Now that you know, you understand why you can’t have this baby.”

She couldn’t stop blinking as she looked at him. Who was this man? Certainly not the one who had lain with her several times, whispered words of undying love to her. He was a stranger.

“Of course, I’ll pay for the abortion.”

“Abortion?”

“Yes. You can’t have this baby, Jessica. My wife…” His voice trailed off.

No, this wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening. Maybe something else was going on. How could he tell her he loved her if he was really in love with his wife?

“You said you love me, Andrew.”

“I don’t want this baby.” His voice was firm, leaving no room for doubt—and her heart shattered into a million pieces.

She ran to the bathroom, where she threw up. More evidence of the life growing inside her. Or evidence of the fact that she’d made the biggest mistake of her life.

Andrew wasn’t waiting for her when she emerged from the cabin’s small bathroom.
